7 Ways to Make Household Chores Fun for Kids ...

Some kids enjoy helping mom and dad around the house, but for those who don’t, I have compiled a list of ways to make household chores fun! Instead of making it feel like a punishment, turn on some music and make a game of it. Follow these simple ways to make household chores fun and you’ll never hear your kids whining over it again!

1. Sticker Chart

One of the most common ways to make household chores fun for kids is with a weekly sticker chart. After each task is complete your kids get a sticker next to their name and at the end of the week whomever has the most stickers can receive a little reward! The reward doesn’t have to be something big either; for little ones it can be an extra hour of watching TV and for older kids perhaps they can get an extra dollar with their allowance.

2. Set a Timer

Kids like to compete with each other and what better way to make chores fun than setting a timer! Set the timer and see who can get their room cleaned up before the buzzer goes off. The reward here is the bragging rights over beating their sibling and getting it done before time is up; bonus!

3. Dance Party

No one likes to do their chores without a little music, am I right? So, why not turn the tasks into a dance party and turn the radio up so everyone can sing along while putting their toys away or doing the dishes. You can also create a dance off after each item is picked up off the floor to really get them in the groove to keep up with their chores!

4. Challenge Them

Everyone gets bored when something seems so easy to complete. This can also happen with your little ones when they feel like they are too old to do a certain “kid” type of chore. To make it more exciting, give them a chore that will challenge them. If they like to help mom or dad with folding the laundry, challenge them to see if they can do it on their own the next time. Or, if they help rake the lawn, use a timer to challenge how long it will take them.

5. Treasure Hunt

A great way to get your older kids to have fun with doing their chores is to turn cleaning and dusting into a treasure hunt. While they are lifting up items to vacuum or dust under they may find a dollar or a little trinket they’ve have been asking for! Make the treasure hunt a surprise for them. This way they get encouraged to keep going to find more hidden items.

6. Family Time

Doing chores by yourself isn’t very fun. Turn certain tasks into family time so your kids feel like they have a buddy who is helping them out. This will also make the time go by faster when they have someone to talk to. My sister and I used to do the dishes together when we were younger. She would clean and I would dry or vice versa. It was a time for us to connect and bond while doing our chores and listen to playlists we put together!

7. Play Pretend

Everyone knows the story of Cinderella and her wicked stepsisters and stepmother who made her clean and do all the house chores, right? So to have fun while doing the chores with your kids, play pretend and dress up like Cinderella with handkerchiefs or bandanas on your heads, and an apron tied around your waist while you sing along to songs from the hit Disney movie! Your little girls will want to play again and again, plus you’ll get the cleaning done as well...score!

Every parent has their own secret way to make household chores fun for kids, so how do you get it done?
