Mommy burnout is something that happens to most moms at some point in time. It’s nothing to feel bad about. It is something that you want to pay attention to, though. If you’re feeling mommy burnout, that’s a sign you need a break ASAP.
One sign of mommy burnout is exhaustion. You’re beyond tired. You aren’t just physically tired but you’re fatigued mentally, too. As wonderful and rewarding as motherhood is, it can do that to you. If you’re feeling exhausted, then you probably need to arrange for some time away from your sweeties that’s just for you.
When you’re running on fumes you’re more likely to be impatient. Getting some time away isn’t just something you do for yourself. It’s something you do to help yourself be a better mom. Something we tend to forget when we become moms is that we aren’t only moms. We’re still people with needs of our own.
If you feel like it’s been weeks since you talked about anything besides “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” then it probably has. Being a mom can feel isolating at times. Call a friend to get your fix of adult conversation. Another option would be to meet a mom friend for a play date. Not only can you talk to another adult but you’re talking to one that understands what you’re feeling.
If you’re having meltdowns, then you’re dealing with some definite mommy burnout. Moms need to be in control of their emotions and if you aren’t, you need a time-out of your own. Arrange to get away by yourself for a little bit. Go shopping, get your nails done or do whatever makes you feel relaxed and refreshed. You’ll probably find that you’re missing your babies by the time your break is over which is a good thing. It means you’re ready to dive into parenting again.
If you’ve forgotten what it feels like to do your hair, apply makeup or wear anything besides yoga pants, then you’re due for a break. Call Grandma and arrange for some childcare so you can focus on being you the person, not you the mommy. Meet a girlfriend for lunch or go out on a date with your guy. It’s a good idea to take time to look your best when you’re at home with your baby, too. It makes you feel better about yourself.
Oh, the dreaded overwhelmed feeling. This feeling is not a good one. It usually means you’ve been doing too much for too long. It also means that you feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders. It’s time to shift some of those responsibilities, even if it’s just for a little while. Get yourself a break and if possible, talk to Dad about pitching in if he isn’t already.
If you can’t remember the last time you had a break then you’re probably dealing with mommy burnout. But sometimes moms can’t get a break for various reasons. If this is true of you then you’re going to have to get a little more creative. Use your baby’s naptime to paint your nails or read a book instead of cleaning out closets. Go shopping or meet a friend for lunch with baby along. The important thing is that you take care of yourself and your needs.
