1. Don’t Go for an Antique
One important rule of crib safety you should follow is to not use an antique crib, at least unless you scrutinize it very carefully. Antique cribs, while beautiful, are also not safe in many cases. They were not made with the safety standards that we follow today. Enjoy them from afar and buy your baby a new crib that meets current safety standards. It will give you more peace of mind.
2. Make Sure the Mattress Fits Snugly
It is very important to make sure that your mattress fits the crib snugly. Follow the measurements required of a mattress exactly. If there is any kind of gap at all, it could be a danger to your baby. Not using the correct size of mattress can put your baby at risk of injury or even death. Don’t allow any old mattress to do.

3. Avoid the Fluffy Stuff
It is best to avoid having anything that could be deemed as fluffy in your baby’s crib. This would include items such as pillows, stuffed animals, soft bedding and even bumper pads. I know that all of those items look adorable. It is fine to use them while your baby is still sleeping in a bassinet. But once you transfer baby to a crib, it is time for them to go.
4. Make Sure Crib Rails Are up Securely
Always put the crib rails up securely. If the rails don’t latch correctly, they could fall and cause injury. Additionally, your baby will surprise you with their ability to move and maneuver around sooner than you think. Babies can and do climb out of cribs, injuring themselves through a fall. Many mothers have been surprised to see their babies on the floor beside the crib instead of inside of it.
5. Make Sure All Hardware is Secure
It is a good idea to make sure that the crib is firmly put together. Go over all the bolts and screws to be sure they are not loose. It is a good idea to do this periodically, as they can work loose. You should also check for any splintered wood. If there is anything that seems rickety on the crib, have it repaired or replace the crib.

6. Leave Some Distance around the outside of the Crib
This is something most moms do not think about. However there is a good reason to do this. If you have things close by the exterior of the crib, your baby may reach and grab them, causing themselves injury. One of my children actually did this when he was small. The result was a call to Poison Control when he ingested Balmex. Leave a good foot of space between the crib and any other items.
7. Know when It is Time to Pack the Crib Away
Lastly, know when it is time to pack the crib away. If your baby is starting to climb, it is time. Don’t underestimate your baby. It is better to move up to a toddler bed before your baby is hurt through falling from their crib. Err on the side of caution.
Crib safety is a subject we should pay careful attention to. What other rules could you add to this list? All comments are welcome!
