1. Help Your Child Memorize Important Numbers and Addresses

One of the most important tips to ensure your child’s safety I could give you is to advise you to help your little one memorize all the important numbers that he (she) should know and especially your home address. Make him (her) memorize your phone number, your e-mail address or other details that will come in handy in case he (she) ever gets lost.

2. Tell Your Child to Never Go with Strangers

This is one of the things everybody heard ever since they were very little and it’s still something you should teach your child now days. Tell them that a stranger is someone who they don’t know, who are not related to them or who doesn’t know their parents. Also, tell your child that he (she) should never go anywhere with someone without telling their parents first.

3. Buy Your Kid a Whistle

Even if this may seem a little bit silly, it actually isn’t. Buy your kid a whistle, tell them to always carry it with them and blow their whistle in case something bad happens to them or if a suspicious person (a stranger) tries to approach them against their will. This will help catch other people’s attention and scare the criminal. If your child is a bit older, you can even consider buying them a pepper spray.

4. Monitor the Way Your Child Uses the Internet

Most sex offenders use the Internet now days to attract their “prey”, so try to keep your child safe and monitor the way he (she) uses the Internet. Tell them not to give personal information to people over the Internet and that they should always keep this information private. Nobody should know where they live or what school they attend. Also, if they use social networks, advise them to make their profile private, so it can’t be accessed by someone who doesn’t know them.

5. Teach Your Child Some Self-Defense Techniques

It’s always good to teach your child any type of self-defense techniques. You can sign him (her) up for a few karate lessons. They will have lots of fun and they will also learn a lot of things that will help them defend themselves. They don’t need to become experts or win a bunch of medals; they just need to know what they should do in case somebody attacks them. It’s always best they be prepared even if (hopefully) they will never encounter a situation where they’ll have to use what they’ve learned during those classes.

6. Tell Your Child to Observe Their Surroundings

Teach your child to always observe his (her) surroundings every time they walk alone, whether they come home from school or they go to a friend’s house. Advise them to look over their shoulders every now and then and even to look at parked cars that seem suspicious and to avoid them. Tell them to ask for help if they notice some suspicious stranger following them.

7. Advise Your Child to Hang out with Your Friends in Your Home

Try to encourage your child to spend time with his (her) friends in your own home so you’ll be able to keep an eye on what they are doing or notice where they are going. Have snacks and think of fun activities they could do so you’ll help them enjoy that time spend at home. Talk to the parents of your child’s friends and advise them to do the same.

It’s more than okay to think about your child’s safety, but at the same time, you should try not to over exaggerate so you won’t turn your kid into a paranoid adult. Find the perfect balance between keeping them safe and allowing them to face all kinds of dangers on their own. Can you think of other ways to ensure your child’s safety? Also don't buy things with your kids name on it, a stranger who calls your child by name, may not seem like a stranger to them

We always had a password when my kids were growing up, they knew if the person did not know the password, then they were not sent by us to pick them up
