7 so-Called Necessities for Babies That They Simply Don't Need ...

By Eliza

When you find out you’re having a baby, it can be difficult to avoid buying every product on the market, but there are some necessities for kids that you simply don’t need, no matter how easy they promise to make your life. Based on my experience, there are so many items on the market that I simply didn’t use even though I was so excited about having them. I’ll share these so-called necessities for kids so you don’t waste your time or money.

1

Diaper Pail

It’s just a glorified trashcan that you’ll shell out big money for. Sure, it promises to eliminate odor, but the truth is that a diaper pail holds so many diapers that the stink wafts out anyway, unless you empty it every day. The point is to not have to do that, so my advice is just to buy a small trashcan, fit it with a grocery bag, fill it up with diapers during the day and then take it out each night. You’ll save cash on one of the so-called necessities for kids and your baby’s nursery won’t smell bad.

Breastfeeding Cover

Sure, they’re adorable and most new moms have one, but they cost a pretty penny and really, doesn’t a blanket work just as well? I kid you not when I say I got over 50 receiving blankets at my first baby shower. Not only did I not have to pay for them, but those blankets are the perfect size and thickness for covering up while nursing.

Wipes Warmer

They might be a bit more comfortable, but you can’t take them with you anytime you leave the house, so chances are your little one will get used to a cool wipe on her bottom. Plus, they are often electric, which means you’ll have a cord in your little one’s nursery, which she may figure out how to play with when she gets a bit older. Then, you’ll just have to remove it anyway. Don’t waste your money.

4

A Robe

Yes, they are adorable! In fact, all three of my kids had one. The problem is that they don’t really wear a robe. They’re not comfortable for a baby and the tie poses a strangulation risk. To be honest, the only time my kids wore their infant robes, which were all gifts, was right after a bath for the five-step walk to the bedroom for pajamas or to take cute and totally posed photographs.

5

DVDs

Don’t worry, your baby will be smart without making him watch mindless DVDs. They might catch his attention, but he’s better off using his arms to reach for toys, listening to your voice reading stories and playing with himself in front of a mirror. Your baby’s intelligence isn’t dependent on educational videos. In fact, you may just start a bad habit of sitting in front of the television all day.

Famous Quotes

Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.

Fancy Clothes

Sure the Juicy Couture sweatshirt is cute, but your baby isn’t strutting around all day, so chances are no one will notice it’s designer label. Save the cash and buy yourself one instead. Then grab the simple store brand sweat suit for your little one. I promise, she’ll look just as cute, but you won’t be headed to the bank for a loan to cover the cost of the scrap of fabric you just paid $100 for.

7

A Walker

Trust me, your baby will learn to walk just fine on his own. I have three kids who never used a walker to prove it too. Plus, walkers are dangerous because your little one can wheel it down a flight of stairs or bump the stove and tip over a pot of boiling water. Skip the walker and get an exercise saucer instead. They are loaded with fun toys, don’t move around and they make a great holding cell for your baby when you need to go to the bathroom. And make sure your baby has plenty of time on the floor to play, which is how he gets the leg strength to start walking.

What baby item do you think is unnecessary? Have you been tricked into buying something you didn’t even use? Oh yes, I have too!
