Ways to induce labour must enter the mind of every woman towards the end of her pregnancy. After waddling around feeling like an elephant for what seems like ages, you´re prepared to try any way of inducing labour, no matter how bizarre, if it means getting this baby out into the world! So here are some ways to induce labour that other women believe did the trick …
One of the classic ways to induce labour is to have a curry. Is this an old wives´ tale? It seems that it´s not an infallible method of getting a reluctant baby to emerge from a nice cosy womb – but anything´s worth a try. At the very least, you can enjoy a nice takeout meal (without a doubt, you won´t feel much like cooking by this stage of your pregnancy!)
2. Homeopathic Remedies
There are a number of homeopathic remedies that can help. As always, do consult your doctor or midwife first. Use a registered, qualified homeopath, as the appropriate remedy will vary according to your individual situation and needs.
Another old faithful on the ´get labour going´ list. Let´s face it, nobody expects to have the energy or opportunity once the baby arrives, so you might as well enjoy it while you can!
4. Raspberry Leaf Tea/ Tablets
This has long been believed to help in inducing labour. However, it is not suitable in all cases, so as always get medical advice first. If your doctor okays the use of raspberry leaf, you can take it in tea or tablet form.
Some women find reflexology helps to get their labour going. Another advantage of reflexology is that you can get your partner to learn some techniques to help relax you during labour (he might as well do something useful!).
Walking is believed to be effective as gravity helps your baby move into the correct position for birth. At the very least, you´ll get some good exercise and pass some time until he or she decides to put in an appearance!
7. Evening Primrose Oil
This is one method that can be started earlier as it works more gradually. It may help to ripen the cervix, get the baby´s head further into the pelvis, and thus bring on labour.
If you´ve got a stubborn baby that doesn´t want to come out, try inducing labour by bouncing! Get a fitness ball and shake the little tyke out J
9. Nipple Stimulation
Another possibility is to get tweaking! Nipple stimulation releases oxytocin, which is the hormone that brings on labour. Either use a breast pump or roll them between your fingers.
10. Relax and Wait!
Some believe that trying to induce labour is pointless, and that the best way to get the process going is simply to wait for nature to take its course! Babies turn up when they´re good and ready, so you might as well relax and wait.
Of course, in reality it´s difficult to know if these methods of inducing labour actually work; even if labour starts straight away it could be complete coincidence. Still, after nine seemingly endless months, almost anything is worth a try! Don´t forget to speak to your doctor or midwife before trying any methods of inducing labour. Which ways to induce labour have you tried or heard of?
