Your parents have done a lot for you. They may not be the best parents in the world, but they did try their best to give you the best they could. It takes a lot of patience, perseverance, dedication and love to bring up a child and for that you need to be thankful to your parents. Here are 7 ways to thank your parents.
1. Give or Make a Simple Meaningful Gift
This point was generously submitted by one of our readers, Lue. Thanks Lue! You can submit your own point at the bottom of the post. We'd love to hear from you!
It doesn't have to be an extremely expensive gift.
In fact, small gifts that have a special meaning to your parents are better than an expensive gift they don't care about. Draw ideas for the gift from your parents. Does your dad have a hobby? Does your mom really need something? You can also get ideas from moments you have spent with them. Is there a memorable baseball game you watched with them? Get something based on that. It's all about the meaningful things.
2. Just Say ‘thank You’
Although this seems like the most obvious of all ways to thank your parents and sounds like the easiest thing in the world to do, it is not as easy as it sounds. It takes a lot of courage to look into their eyes, or even pick up the phone and call them, and say ‘thank you for everything you have done for me.’
3. Put It in Writing
If words don’t seem to come out right when you are talking to your parents, put it all down in writing. Not only will you find this easier to do, your parents will always cherish be able to your words.
4. Don’t Wait for Special Occasions
Of course, there is Mother’s Day and Father’s day when you can parade your love for your parents without being self conscious. There are other occasions like their birthdays and anniversaries when it is easy to say thank you. But, not waiting for those occasions and saying the right words when the time is right is more important.
5. Reach out to Them
If you are not very close to your parents, reach out to them. Use gratitude as an excuse to re-enter and become a part of their lives. They will appreciate this more than you can ever realize.
6. Visit Them
If you don’t live with your parents, chances are that you don’t get to visit them very often. Everybody’s life is hectic, but takes the time to go visit them and really talk to them. Make them feel that they are still a part of your lives. Continuing to be a part of each-others' lives is one of the best ways to thank your parents for giving you life.
7. Get Nostalgic with Them
Have conversations with them that start with ‘Remember when…..?’ Take this opportunity to thank your parents for whatever they did for you at that time. Even if they didn’t think much about it at that time, they will be gratified to hear that you remember all the small things they did for you.
8. Be Willing to Be Vulnerable
Thanking your parents can be a very emotional process. You can’t do it properly without allowing yourself to be vulnerable to the emotions that come up. Go ahead and shed a tear or two.
These are just 7 ways to thank your parents. If you think about it, you can come up with many others ways that seem more suited to you and your parents. Try them all out. You will be surprised how having such a relationship with your parents can change your life.
