7 Things to Consider before Adopting a Child ...

Some adoptive parents wish to let their child know all about his/her birth parents as soon as possible. Others choose to keep the adoption a secret and allow the child to think that the adoptive parents are the birth parents. It's best to figure out which route you are going to take well before the time comes.

Ethnicity, age, and gender of the child to be adopted need to be considered. People don’t simply waltz into an adoption agency and pick a child at random. Some families choose to adopt a child with special needs. Think about the type of child that you wish to bring into your family and be sure you and your loved ones are all on the same page.

With all the celebrities adopting kids from overseas, it seems that it's the 'in' thing to do. When adopting internationally, you'll need to consider the cultural needs of the child and the additional laws you will have to abide by. Adopting a child in your own country can be a lengthy process in itself, but an overseas adoption is a whole new ball of wax.

Are you looking to adopt because you can't have any children at all? Do you want another child to be a playmate for the only child you have now? Do you simply want to provide a better life for a child who has been in an orphanage for most of his/her life? Figure out why you want to adopt in the first place.

Financially and emotionally you need to be ready before you decide to go through with the adoption. If you are adopting because you are unable to have kids of your own, are you prepared at how this new child will make you feel? Some people want a child so badly that they rush into adoption. They aren't prepared for the sadness they feel every time they look at their adoptive child who serves as a reminder that the couple was unable to produce their own offspring. Having kids always has a financial side that needs to be considered. When adopting, you'll need to figure in the regular cost kids require, as well as all the legal fees involved.

States have different requirements that adoptive parents need to meet. It's a good idea to find out what these requirements are before delving into an adoption. It would be extremely heartbreaking to get excited about adopting a child, just to find out later that you don't meet the requirements.

Is this child going to be welcomed by everyone in the family? Will there be jealousy? Resentment? Anger? Think about all the positive and negative effects adopting a child can have on the family and discuss it; as a family. Put everything out into the open so that no questions are left unanswered.
