How to Keep Your Marriage Your Family Stability Fresh during the Pandemic ...

There’s no doubt that this is one of the most bizarre and harrowing times in American history, certainly in our lifetime. The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the world and changed the way we live our lives.

One reality of the pandemic is that many of us are spending an inordinate amount of time at home with our families. While ultimately most people would consider this a good thing, let’s be honest and admit that sometimes we get sick of each other. Especially with restless kids who have nothing to do but follow you around the house asking questions, this can be a trying situation.

Additionally, for married couples, it can be hard to keep the romance fresh when you have to spend every waking moment together.

Stay Healthy - Don’t Get All Nihilistic!

This sounds like the most cliched tip in history, but the reality is it can’t be said enough. The pandemic has restricted so many aspects of our lives, from exercise regimens to social spheres, that it’s easy to fall into a pit of despair, both physically and emotionally.

Without exercise and a good diet, your body - which is likely already compromised with extra levels of the stress hormone cortisol - will not provide you with the energy you need to flourish. Without a healthy body, your emotions will suffer and that affects interpersonal relationships greatly.

For some people, the claustrophobia of the pandemic quarantine mandates has meant spending an unusually large amount of time with their significant other. This can be good; it can also be bad if you start getting sick of each other. You owe it to your relationship to create some ground rules and make sure you each get enough alone time. You should also mix things up: take up new hobbies together; see if yoga, meditation, and outdoor hikes can reignite sparks.

This tip also extends to any special medical conditions either partner may have. With many doctors’ offices closed to any non-urgent or life-threatening needs, it might be hard to get an appointment.

If it’s something like ED (or erectile dysfunction, which many men experience but which is often talked about in embarrassed whispers), that is holding up your love life, you’ll be happy to know, there is a new fleet of next-generation remedies that are affordable and non-intrusive, unlike pills and surgery. You can now get an effective ED device without even seeing a doctor.

The Kids Are Alright - Let Them Navigate These Times with Some Freedom

The pandemic, as mentioned above, has essentially quagmired families in their homes. With most schools still not open and normal recreational facilities closed, like movie theaters, arcades, etc., many parents are floundering with restless kids.

While you may be responsible for making sure the kids are completing their remote learning projects and providing other healthy activities, you don’t need to be a helicopter parent during a pandemic. If you have trusted friends who also have kids, it might be wise to let your kids play outside together. Require them to wear masks and practice social distancing, but it’s simply impossible to stop kids from playing. Channel their energy into constructive games and learning activities.

Someday You Will Look Back on This Time - Get the Most out of It!

It’s often said that we learn the most about our lives from the bad times. In the face of adversity and extreme stress, we find out our true character. Well, this is one of those times. We’re all going through it and there’s no telling how much longer it will last.

If you and your family are healthy and not struggling financially, consider that a blessing from the universe and use this time to build strong interpersonal and family roots. Someday you will remember this time and wonder what you did with all of those hours with your family. As they say, you only realize how good something is after it’s gone. Someday you may regret not using this time with your loved ones.
