By Ashley

Trying to get your kids to love reading? One way to do that is through sing-along books! Guest contributor Ashley Hardway shares some fun sing-along books that your kids and you are sure to love!

Kids love music, it is just a fact. However I love to read and I want to share that love of reading with my children. To do that, we found some books that incorporate both fun songs and great stories. Here are a few of my favorites:

1 Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin JrFull of bright colors and basic shapes, this is a great book to cover the alphabet with young children. As each letter tries to climb a coconut tree, will the tree stand? Or will it go boom?

2 Down by the Bay by Raffi

Down by the Bay by RaffiEven I can’t get this song out of my head. When a small child goes down by the bay where the watermelon grows, he finds more than he bargained for. Now he has to go back to his mother and explain why there were ‘whales with polka dot tails’ and other weird sightings. Kids will love to point out the images that don’t seem to belong and sing along with this fun and energetic story.

3 Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes... by Annie Kubler

4 Little Bunny Foo Foo: Told and Sung by the Good Fairy by Paul Brett Johnson

Little Bunny Foo Foo: Told and Sung by the Good Fairy by Paul Brett JohnsonIf bopping field mice on the head sounds like something your child would love to get away with, then this fun book is for them. With a break between each stanza for the good fairy to correct the little bunny’s misbehavior, kids will be roaring with laughter by the end of this rabbit’s tale.

5 On Top of Spaghetti by Paul Brett Johnson

On Top of Spaghetti by Paul Brett JohnsonSung to the tune of «On Top of Old Smokey», this children’s book follows the adventures of a roving meatball, escaping the clutches of a chef that sprinkled on a little too much pepper. From the cute pictures to the funny story line, kids are sure to love reading and singing along with this book.

6 Shake My Sillies out by Raffi

A favorite bedtime book at my house, this one is a sure bet when you have kids that have a little too much energy to lay down and go to sleep. As the campers and the animals in the woods get ready for bed they find they have to ‘shake the sillies out’. With fun moves and a cute story, kids will be ready to go to sleep by the end.

7 Ten Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Tina Freeman

Ten Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Tina FreemanA fun count down book for kids, the ten little monkeys are falling off the bed just like their mother warned them they would. But does that stop them? Of course not. As their number dwindles kids can see how fast they can count down from ten.

8 The Ants Go Marching by Dan Crisp

A fun book with a marching beat, this sing along story helps kids to learn how to count and the illustrations help with that as well. As the ants march home from the rain, kids will love the boom sound effects of the raindrops falling and the curious things the ants get up to on their way home.

9 The House That Jack Built by Diana Mayo

The House That Jack Built by Diana MayoPoor Jack built a house, but he had no idea so much would happen because of it. This building up song book is a fun way to help children remember each point and the illustrations really make it come alive. Although the original wording is a little old-fashioned, you can still get the idea and kids will soon learn to love the book and all of its words.

10 The Lady with the Alligator Purse by Nadine Bernard Westcott

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly by Simms TabackIf absurd is your kid’s favorite word then this book is for you. When an old lady swallows a fly she then has to swallow a spider to catch the fly, right? On and on it goes as she swallows animal after animal. The end will be as unexpected every time and your kids will ask to read it again and again.

As you can see, sing along books are a great way to turn story time into fun time. Get kids up and moving, practice their reading skills, and bond with them over some of your favorite songs.
