1. The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein

Shel Silverstein has long been a child’s favorite. You can’t go wrong with any of his books to read to children. His fun and witty poems are perfect for reading to children. "The Giving Tree" has the same wonderful qualities that we love from Shel Silverstein, but also gives an important message to children about the power of giving to other and love.

2. Love You Forever by Robert N. Munsch

"Love You Forever" is an amazing sweet story to read to your children to remind them that no matter, "I like you forever; I’ll love you for always. As long as I’m living my baby you will be." In the story a mother rocks her son to sleep every night and tells him how much she loves him. Even as he gets older and becomes an adult she still rocks him and tells him how he is forever her baby.

3. The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister

This is a fantastic book because it teaches children an important lesson on vanity and sharing. Rainbow Fish is said to be the most beautiful fish in all the sea. He has bright sparkly scales that the other fish admire. His attitude about his good looks leaves him with no friends, until he learns about sharing. Because of all the important lessons, I think this is a great book to read to children.

4. Skippyjon Jones, Lost in Spice by Judy Schachner

Have you had the joy of meeting Skippyjon Jones, yet? You and your children are going to love him, I promise. It's actually one of my favorite books for children. Despite his appearance, Skippyjon Jones is not a Chihuahua, he is a Siamese kitten. He is always up for a wild adventure. In this book he is off to prove Mars is red because it’s covered in red spicy pepper. The books are filled with fun play on words and also include Spanish.

5. Amelia Bedelia by Peggy Parish

I remember reading about Amelia Bedelia when I was a kid. She’s such a wacky absentminded housekeeper. She does the funniest things. Stories about her are fun to share with your children. You are both sure to laugh until your faces hurt. When you're looking for new books to read to children, it's always great to choose something you'll both enjoy.

Of course we all know Dr. Seuss. He’s a child’s favorite and probably one of your favorites too. His stories are fun and often have important lessons. The lesson here is about challenges and success. It is a good book to read to children during times of transition, such as getting a new sibling or starting school, or making a move.
