7 Childrens Books Every Adult Should Read

Just the other day I was talking with a friend and likening an acquaintance to Mr Darcy. When my friend asked who Mr. Darcy was and I told her that he was the hero in Pride and Prejudice she retorted, "Oh I haven’t seen that one." As an avid book reader and a lover of classic literature this was a complete anathema and has set me on a mini crusade to re-introduce books to the generation who seem to have lost them. So girls, get down to the bookshop, pick a title or two, ignore the latest SMS, leave the glossy magazine full of fluff on the coffee table and turn off the TV reminder for the latest chick flick. Now, grab a glass (or two) of wine, a bar of chocolate and curl up on the sofa for a jolly good read.

Getting back to basics - here’s a list of books aimed at children that every adult should have read.

1. Black Beauty (Anna Sewell)

No. It’s not about Beyoncé’s skincare routine! Black beauty is a horse at the centre of a story that teaches the fundamentals of treating people with kindness, respect and sympathy. It is unashamedly about animal welfare but doesn’t require us to view pictures of dancing bears in chains or rabbits in vivisection cages to get the message.

2. One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish (Dr Seuss)

No list such as this would be complete without a Dr Seuss title. Simple rhyming phrases deliver a story about 2 children and the fantastic creatures they have as pets and friends. If you need a drinking game at a party or barbeque, get your guests to read out passages quickly after you’ve all had a few glasses of the punch.

Frequently asked questions

3. The Water Babies (Charles Kingsley)

Pass on by if you’re looking for instructions for the birthing pool because this is a tale of morals set in Victorian England delivered in a way only a protagonist of the era could do. Meet characters called Mrs Doasyouwouldbedoneby and Mrs Bedonebyasyoudid and be transported back to the times of child chimney sweeps and workhouse living.

4. Little Women (Louisa May Alcott)

Who could fail to be captivated by the March Sisters? It has what every self-respecting romantic drama should have; unrequited love, financial hardship, premature death, absence of loved ones, tomboys and princesses, irascible maiden aunts with a cranky pooch and mischief and mayhem aplenty. Oh, and a very happy ending, of course. Keep the tissues close.

5. The Magic Far Away Tree (Enid Blyton)

Very possibly the most surreal and magical trip you’ll ever take without the help of a banned substance. The lands at the top of the Magic Tree come and go as they please and there are adventures for the characters living in the tree as the Land of Topsy Turvy suddenly changes to the Land of Tempers and then maybe the Land of Magic Medicines.

6. The Harry Potter Series (J.K. Rowlings)

Now now, no groans please. You can’t possibly have had your fill of the boy wizard yet. The books are a much better experience than watching the films, as good as they are. J.K.R. is no slouch at immersing you in her world and you’ll be so spellbound you’ll read the books more quickly than you imagine.

7. Guess How Much I Love You? (Sam McBratney)

If you need some tips on how to play the one-upmanship game, look no further. Two hares compete in ever expanding measures to prove how much they love each other. It’s also handy for finding that perfect phrase to get rid of the unwanted boyfriend by telling him he doesn’t show he loves you because he doesn’t …!

After all this, if you can’t be bothered with the written word or are too busy reading the fabulous articles on Allwomenstalk then at least rent the DVDs. If anyone has a book to add this list please feel free to let us know.
