7 Ways to Make the Best of a Real Life Modern Family ...

A real life modern family isn’t always as easy as it appears to be on everyone’s favorite TV show, Modern Family. Even so, there are definitely some positives and advantages to a real life modern family, even if it may not always seem like it. Coming from a real life modern family myself, I know just how true that is. Just this morning, I learned that my new baby brother was born, which I think makes me more qualified than ever to give some advice on the topic. Whether you’re a child or a parent trying to make the best of your “modern family,” I promise that something on this list will help you!

1 Look for the Benefits

Even on the days when it feels like there’s nothing positive about your “modern family,” you can find the positives in it. Kids get better at adapting, they become emotionally stronger, they become more self-reliant, and that’s just to name a few of the many positives! Even when it doesn’t feel like it, there are positives to your real life modern family!

2 Happier Family Life

One of the most important things to remember when you’re a part of a modern family is that your life is probably happier as it is. Obviously there’s a reason your family life is the way it is, and that’s probably for a good reason. If you’re trying to make the most of your new blended family, that’s often a good tip to remember.

3 Bigger Family

Families are fun, and the bigger family you have, the better. Real life modern families are great because you get to expand your family, even if it’s just a little bit. Even if you don’t necessarily like your new family all the time, they’re your family, and they’ll always be there for you.

4 Work for It

Real life modern families aren’t easy. There’s no getting around that. They require work to be positive for everyone involved, whether you’re a child or a parent. No matter where you fall in your real life modern family tree, it’s important to put some work in to truly make it a positive experience.

5 Be Open

Being open is especially important if you’re a child. You may not want to accept your new family quickly, but being open to them is a good way to get on the right track. It may not be the easiest at first, but it’ll pay off in the end, I promise!

6 Flexibility

Flexibility applies to all parties involved in blended families. You need to be flexible to anything and everything, because things can change in an instant. Whether you’re a parent or a child, your life can change quickly, and you have to be able to adapt and adjust to any and all of life’s changes.

7 Let Go of Negativity

Letting go of negativity is perhaps one of the most important tips to remember when it comes to a new, blended family. It’s probably safe to say that there was negativity that came out of your previous familial relationships. It’s important to let go of that negativity and anger to truly accept your new family.

Are you a part of a real life modern family? What have been some of the struggles and triumphs? How did you get through those times? What advice would you give yourself if you could?
