There are certain, specific ways to be a good mom when your child plays sports that are different than ways to be a good mom at other times. The kind of mom you should be when your child is in sports is pretty clear cut. I do not do this perfectly but these are the goals I do my best to work toward. These are a good guideline for the ways to be a good mom when your child is involved in sports.

Make Sure Your Child is on Time

Everyone runs late sometimes but as much as possible, I try to be on time for all of my children’s sports practices and games. In fact, I aim to arrive early enough for my children to make any change of clothing necessary and get prepared before they actually have to be on the floor or field. This helps both of us to not have the stress of worrying over being late. It also is the responsible thing to do. It is one of the ways to be a good mom when your child plays sports.

2

Make Sure Your Child Has What They Need

Another way that you can be a good mom when your child plays sports is to make sure that they have what they need. This includes anything they need in the way of a uniform or shoes, beverages, snacks or money for anything necessary during their sports events. Since I am not overly knowledgeable about sports, this is one way I can be supportive. I make sure my children have what they need for the sports they are participating in. It is a small thing but it’s a big thing, too.

3

Let the Coach Be the Coach

This is a problem a lot of parents have. They want to be the coach. Our job is to be the parents. It is fine to cheer them on but when it comes down to real coaching, it is best to let the coach be the coach.

4

Try to Learn a Little Bit about the Sport

As much as you can, try to learn a little bit about the sport your child is playing. I admit failure in this department. It isn’t that I don’t want to learn; it’s that I don’t understand sports very well. My daughter was very recently disappointed in me for not understanding what a point guard was. So, this is something I definitely need to work on.

5

Display Good Sportsmanship

It is very hard to display good sportsmanship at times. It is easy to get a bit passionate, shall we say, when a call is made that we don’t agree with. But it is important that we as parents display good sportsmanship. After all, our children are watching us. They are learning from us. It is important to make sure we are teaching them the right thing.

Famous Quotes

Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.

Teach Good Sportsmanship

This is exactly what I was referring to when I stressed the importance of setting a good example. We can hardly expect our children to display good sportsmanship if we are not. But sometimes, good sportsmanship is something that must be learned on their own and our children will still make mistakes at this. When that is the situation, it is our place as parents to step in and correct that behavior. This is one time coaches generally welcome your input.

7

Be There

You know, of all of these things, this is one of the most important, if not the most important. Just be there. There are times when we cannot be due to illness or a work obligation we cannot shift, but as much as you can, be at your child’s games or practices. If both parents cannot be there, try to have at least one in attendance. It means so much to them, even if they do not say it.

Being a good mom when your child plays sports is difficult but these tips should guide you in the right direction. What do you think? What else can we do to be good sports moms for our children?
