7 Tips for Getting Your Baby to Try New Foods ...

I don't know about you, but I think one of the toughest things about being a parent is getting your baby to try new foods. My son hates to eat anything more than once but he also hates to eat most new foods that I try to give him. His meal times have become a delicate balance of old and new. So, if you're anything like me, you spend a lot of time getting your baby to try new foods. Luckily, after a year I have a few tips and tricks that make meal times so much easier!

1

Be Patient

The most important thing to remember when getting your baby to try new foods is to be patient. The more frustrated you become, the more frustrated your baby becomes and soon, you'll look up and see a baby covered in food (If your kid is anything like mine, food will be more in the hair than anywhere else), and you'll have a shirt full of that new healthy homemade meal that you spent hours perfecting. Just take a deep breath and try to be as patient as you can.

2

Take Away Distractions

Let me tell you how meal time goes in my house. I put my son in his high chair, grab his food and start to feed him. Sounds normal enough right? NOPE! The second he hears anything, and I do mean ANYTHING, his head whips around (most of the time mid bite so his spoon drags food across his face) and he tries to figure out where the noise came from and if the noise maker is more interesting than what he's doing. Most of the time it is. So, I found out a long time ago that if I wanted the baby to eat, I had to take away anything that would distract him.

3

Be Persistent

Your son/daughter doesn't like that new banana muffin recipe that you just tried? Try again in a day or two. I'm telling you, persistence with food is key. G-man hated carrots when they were pureed. But, that didn't stop me from feeding them to him steamed. If at first you don't succeed with something new, try and try again.

4

Know when to Walk Away

This is a little harder than being persistent but sometimes, you just have to know when to give up. After 678 times trying to get your baby to eat Greek yogurt, maybe he just hates Greek yogurt. The line between persistence and stubbornness is thin, so don't try to walk it too hard.

5

Try New Foods First

This one sounds a little silly but you have no idea how many of my mom friends try to give their babies new things when they are already full. My son doesn't even like to eat his favorite things if I introduce them halfway through another meal. Always, always, always try new things first when your little one is most hungry.

Try New Presentations/ Mixes

If your little one hates peas, add them to something else, for example, make them into a soup. Sometimes it's a texture issue and you just need to change up how your little angel sees what you're trying to feed him.

7

Don't Try New Foods when Your Baby is Grumpy

This tip is pretty self explanatory but, if your baby is in a bad mood or sleepy, or is just having one of those days, stick with something that you know that they'll love, not something that you're trying out for the first time!
