Working out when you’re a mother isn’t easy but it can be accomplished. There are always going to be things that compete for your time and attention. The key is making the decision that you’re worth the time working out takes. It’s an investment in your health that’ll pay off in helping you feel your best and be your best.
1. Work out before They Get up or after They Go down for the Night
One way you can work out when you’re a mom is to do so before your children get up or after they go to sleep. This is especially true when you have small children who require your full attention. Those are the years when you have to work around their schedules. This is one way to do that. Choose whichever time slot fits you best.
2. Choose a Gym with Childcare
Hurray for gyms with childcare! If you’re fortunate enough to live close to a gym with childcare then give it a chance. Your children will only be away from you for a small amount of time and you’re close by if they need you. It’s a nice way for you to get a small break. It can brighten your whole day to get an hour to yourself and get the boost of endorphins exercise gives you. If you’re a stay at home mom then it’s a good motivation to leave the house, too!
3. Enlist Dad’s Help
You don’t have to do it all, moms! I know it’s a temptation because I’ve felt that way at times. But it’s good to take advantage of any offers of help. Let Dad handle baby while you work out. It’s good bonding time for him and baby and good for you to get some time to take care of yourself!
4. Buy a Jogging Stroller
If you’re a runner, you don’t have to give that up. Purchase a jogging stroller so that you can enjoy your favorite way of working out. Jogging strollers are designed to keep your baby safe from jarring so they enjoy a smooth ride. Do some research to determine which is best for you. Your baby will enjoy seeing different sights while you get your daily exercise in.
5. Take a Walk with Your Family
Getting your exercise in can be as simple as taking a walk with your family. It’s a way of getting exercise while spending time together. It can become a nice daily ritual. Sometimes your children will open up and talk to you more when you’re doing something together. This can pay off in more ways than just getting your exercise.
6. Do a Workout DVD
Workout DVDs can be a mom’s best friend! I’ve got my workout many times by following along with a workout DVD. Squeeze your exercise in while your baby is napping or your kids are at school. Some of my favorites are Jillian Michaels and the George Foreman series. It’s not the same as going to the gym, but it’s still a workout.
7. Exercise on Your Lunch Break
If you’re a working mom then this may be an idea for you. It won’t work for everyone but if you’re fortunate enough to have an hour for lunch then maybe you can squeeze in a walk after you eat. Never skip your meal for a workout, though. Eating regular meals is important to your health. As a mom, you have to sometimes be creative in how to get a workout in and this is another option.
