7 Fun Experiments to do with Your Kids Today ...

There are so many fun experiments to do with your kids and you’re going to love this list. My kids are little scientists in the making, so it’s fun to practice by doing experiments on days off from school or when boredom kicks in. So go ahead, pull out some supplies, set your kitchen table up with some fun experiments to do with your kids and it’ll be a tossup whether you have more fun or the kids do.

Baking Soda Bombs

Baking Soda Bombs There’s nothing kids like more than an explosion. Don’t worry, this won’t cause any damage, but it’s fun to see how it works. This is one of my top favorite fun experiments to do with your kids, so get started with this one. Place a tablespoon or so of baking soda in the center of a paper towel. Fold the sides in, then the top and bottom to contain the baking soda. Put some vinegar in a zip top bag. Quickly stick the paper towel in the bag, close it up and toss it on the ground. As the baking soda and vinegar mix, the bag will fill with air and pop. Add some food coloring and toss the bag in the snow for some extra fun!

2

Wiggly Worms

Wiggly Worms This is another fun experiment that uses baking soda and vinegar. Cut several gummy words into four thin strips each with some sharp kitchen scissors. Put a large spoonful of baking soda in a glass or jar and add a cup or so of water. Stir the mixture well, then place the worms into the container and soak them for at least 30 minutes, but up to an hour. Fill another glass or jar with vinegar and transfer the worms to it with a fork. As the vinegar reacts with the baking soda, it will look like the worms come to life and wiggle around.

Milk and Soap Fireworks

Milk and Soap Fireworks You don’t have to wait until the 4th of July to do this experiment, though it works well on that day too. In a shallow saucer, pour some 2% milk. Next, drip food coloring into the milk. Use several colors for a better reaction. Dip the ends of a cotton swab into dish soap. Touch the drops of food coloring with the cotton swab and watch the colors explode!

4

Canister Rocket

Canister Rocket This one explodes rather well and it’s probably better to do it outside. To do the experiment, put about a teaspoon of water into a film canister. You know, those old school gray and black containers that film used to come in? Look at craft stores for similar items if you can’t find one. Add a fizzy tablet (such as Alka-Seltzer) to the film canister and very quickly put the lid on. Set the canister on the ground, lid down. As the water gets fizzy, it’ll fill the film container with air and it’ll pop off the lid and soar into the air.

Clean a Penny

Clean a Penny Next time your child finds a penny, put it in action instead of sticking it into his piggy bank. Fill a bowl with vinegar and add some salt. Stir the mixture then add a few pennies. Let them soak for about 10 slow seconds. Take the pennies out and rinse them under running water. See how shiny they are?

Make Some Butter

Make Some Butter Yep, making butter involves a scientific reaction. And it tastes good too! Simply put some heavy cream into a jar and secure the lid very tightly. Let your child shake the jar for awhile. The more she shakes it, the more air that mixes with the cream, making it thicker and thicker. Open the jar and slather the butter on bread and toast your scientific expertise.

7

Soda Geyser

Soda Geyser Again, this is definitely an experiment you’ll want to do outside. Start with a 2-liter bottle of diet cola. Place it in the middle of your backyard and remove the cap. Give your child a mint Mentos and have him drop it in the soda. Back up quickly because as the soda and the Mentos mix, the soda will erupt from the bottle in a geyser sure to rival Old Faithful!

What’s your favorite science experiment from childhood? I love the ones that pop and fly! Which one will you try first?
