By Pinky

I grew-up in a household where we had certain house rules to abide by; my Mom always said, "For a happy home you must have family rules." I never really believed her until I began my own family and had my own home. There have to be a few simple rules in every household, and I truly believe that these are successful for happy home, you must have family rules, like these.

RESPECT

R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Aretha Franklin had it right when she belted out that song! Respect tops the list of my must have family rules. It is important to respect those who live in the house and to respect the house in general. Odd, right, to respect a house? Well, think about it - take care of it, clean it, and it will always provide a roof over your head. Make it dirty, let it fall apart, so will the structure. And it's always important to treat each other with kindness.

2

SAY I LOVE YOU

I always thought this was silly, until I lost my Dad. He always said "I Love You" whenever he had a chance. And something I truly learned was to always let others know you love them, because you never know when it will be the last time you say it. It's always important to let your parents, siblings, children, and other loved ones know that you do love them, and always will love them.

3

MANNERS

Manners are important in our household. Saying "please" and "thank you" can go a long way. It definitely can turn a day around, and it also shows respect. I always try and teach my kids that manners are everything, even when the person isn't being nice to you. Chivalry isn't dead. It has to be taught for it to be executed.

4

Do YOUR BEST

This is also important in our household. I tell the kids to always try their best when they're stuck. That it's okay to fail at times, but it's most important to try again. Now, my boys are only 4 and 3 so of course we have quite a few accidents, a lot of mishaps. Always trying your hardest is key to any real accomplishment.

5

LAUGH at YOURSELF

You aren't perfect, and people won't expect you to ALWAYS be put together. It's okay to laugh at yourself. I love this family rule! We all probably have had this day where you wake up late, and everything isn't going right, your car won't start, you forget your homework, etc. At times like those, there really isn't much you can do but just laugh it off. Everything happens for a reason, good or bad. Just embrace it.

LISTEN

This applies in many ways. Listen to each other, listen to your parents, etc. I think it's important to always listen to one another, especially as a family. Everyone has their own opinions, and it's good to hear them out. To sit and talk, to listen, is not only healthy for relationships with your kids, and spouse, but in general it's great for communicating with anyone.

7

ALWAYS HELP ONE ANOTHER

We execute this rule on a daily basis in my household. We always help one another with chores, with tasks, etc. It's important to always have each other's back, and help out when you can. It not only helps create a great bond, but it gets a lot of things done compared to one person doing everything.

I think these are some great family rules, and I know there are plenty more. Do you have any you would like to add? Or is there something on this list you don't agree with? Let me know; I'd love to hear your rules!
